Some stories start with a whistle or a trophy. Mine started with my older brother, a ball, and the last light of the evening.
I was eight when he introduced me to basketball. There was no plan and no coach. Just the two of us and a hoop, night after night. We played outside every evening until it got too dark to see the rim, and then a little longer, guessing at the shadow of the backboard.
That is the memory I return to: not one shot, but a thousand evenings stitched together. The bounce of the ball marking time. My brother's voice calling the score.
Basketball taught me discipline before I knew the word for it. Show up. Practice. Try again tomorrow. But more than anything, it gave my brother and me something that always kept us close, a language we still speak without saying much at all.
